I’m thinking about a Newsweek article I read recently, about two mothers, each of whom lost a son in New York on September 11. As the media and the popular rhetoric gets hysterical over that jackass Florida pastor and what I keep seeing called “the Ground Zero mosque debate,” I think these two women deserve a second hearing. They disagree with each other about the community center that’s caused so much controversy — and they disagree civilly, even kindly, and for their own reasons.
It’s a nice reminder that grief is personal before it’s political, and to those who carry it, it means things you might not expect. I humbly suggest that it also be a reminder to the rest of us to calm down a little bit and try to talk to each other with the same patience and understanding these two women share for each other.
“grief is personal before it’s political” — very well put.
Thanks, Dave.
