Just a quick note to encourage those of you interested in what Haiti looks like to follow my friend Huascar Robles’ reporting. He is, among other projects, blogging about it over at the Dart Society. Here’s a sample:
I later visited Parc St. Therese, also in Petionville, and saw a crowd of people dancing and watching television projected onto a large screen. Kids watched with their mouths opened, taking in music videos of Mariah Carey and other artists.
I approached a young man named Desir Faubert. He is 23 and a DJ. Kids danced effusively around his little store to “I Got a Feeling” by The Black-Eyed Peas. He spun the music out of a blue and yellow awning. I noticed his feet were soaked in the dirt water beneath him. The rainy season is rearing its ugly head, and the soil is wet and mixed with excrement and urine.
He told me the music scares the thieves away. He plays through the night to keep people awake and robbers at bay. Recently, he explained, a few men from a different community raided their tents at night, taking what little supplies they have garnered.
