Day of babies!

So today, apparently, is Birthing Day in my life. I woke up to Glenna Gordon’s amazing photos of a Liberian maternity ward, where among many other things to be seen is a woman whose baby-in-the-belly is a totally different round bump than anything the tabloids teach.

Then I stared reading this article about home births, in New York magazine. Among the reasons it says women are getting excited about home births is that there is, in the words of a doctor quoted in a film that set this craze off, “a complex cocktail of love hormones…[that] create a state of dependency, addiction” between babies and mommies.

And all I can think is, for the love of all that is holy, thank God my mother had the good sense to install a firewall of drugs between me and her addiction hormones, because if my phone rang any more than it already does…

I think it’s in their basic DNA for mothers to interfere with their children’s day-to-day life.

Either that or it’s in the contract they signed with the stork that delivered us.

i looked at the nurse and said, “you, put drugs in my back”

i believe god in his wisdom gave us drugs for a reason. lamaze was invented by some man, and any man who insists on his partner using it should have to pass a kidney stone using the same method for pain…sorry, pressure… control.
